3 main components of unfiltered synthesis gas are: Tars, micronic soot, and water vapor. The napkin test allows you to quickly test your gas. In the video you will see that there is a small amount of water vapor. Signs of black on the napkin would mean either soot or tars, possibly both. To test the composition use a hard white surface to collect the sample and test for water solubility. Tars are sticky and stick the valves in engines. Soot is less of a concern. Small amounts are acceptable. Too much soot means that it is time to service the filter.
